The Cold Turkey

I'm going cold turkey on (...)

I'm sorry, I'm not going to tell you what it is. At least not yet. Because, when you decide to do something and then tell people about it before actually doing it, you lose the motivation. So this is one of my principles in life: I keep my mouth closed about my plans. Terms and conditions may apply.

What I'm doing by telling you about this is actually for motivation. I'll tell you what it is in two weeks and whether I succeeded or not. So stay tuned!

While going cold turkey might potentially be the most effective way of getting rid of a bad habit, it has its issues. The most obvious one being withdrawal. Also it takes a lot of effort, courage, determination and motivation. So it's an extremely fragile period. And if you fail, there is a chance of losing self-respect. Like you have no power, no control... You might let yourself go. Surrender. It's a risky business, going cold turkey... But I'm willing to take the risks. And it's not because of a trivial reason like me loving the expression "cold turkey". No. Not at all.

There is also "on the wagon". Or was it "off the wagon"? I guess this is only used for alcoholics. Like if someone is trying to quit drinking and he/she hasn't drunk for a while, we say "she is (still) on the wagon". Or if she couldn't make it we say "she is off the wagon". Or was that the other way round? Let's see: there is this train of non-drinkers. And the train has wagons. As long as she doesn't drink, she is on the wagon. If she drinks, she is off. It makes perfect sense! I only have one question, where does this train goes?

I have never heard of this expression being used for addictions other than alcoholism. Well if that's the case, then this is discrimination against other addictions! Why can't they have an expression as elegant as this one. I'm gonna go ahead and use it for my own addiction:

"I'm on the wagon!"

So where are we going? Sir? Miss? Anyone?

"To a better life, darling..."
